I am a Kurt Vonnegut fan but I had never read his novel Jailbird which was first published 30 years ago in 1979 so I read it.
It is classic Vonnegut, slapstick satire. It is about Walter F. Starbuck who just gets out of Federal Prison for his part in the Watergate affair and he meets up with this old girlfriend, Mary Kathleen O'Looney, AKA, Mrs. Jack Graham, Jr., the heiress and major stockbroker of the RAMJAC corporation which owns most of America.
I laughted and cried.
It says in the prologue:
ut
"John Figler is a law abiding high school student. He says in his letter that he has read almost everthing of mine and is no prepared to state the singe idea that lies at the core of my life's workso far. The words are his, "Love may fail, but courtesy will prevail."
Kurt has now died. May he rest in peace. His unique view of life and the world is something which I have treasured over the years and it has enriched by life.
If anybody wants my copy of Jailbird which is old but readable, send me an email with your address and I will send it to you.
As Kurt said often,
Peace
