The Buffalo News reported on June 3, 2009 about a 3 day proverty challenge. Can you eat on $7.87 per day?
Aaron Bartley hoped he could afford a filling dinner Tuesday after already spending $4.97 for breakfast and lunch.
He only had $2.90 left in his daily food budget and decided his best bet on a meal would be beans and rice.
“It’s a way I can try to fill my empty stomach. I am so hungry,” he said at about 4:30 p. m.
Bartley, the director at People United for Sustainable Housing, is one of six local leaders participating in the three-day Poverty Challenge. Each participant is allowed to spend only $7.87 a day for food.
The event is designed to spark a community dialogue on poverty in the Buffalo area.
Interesting concept. I guess three days is just enough so that people would consider actually trying it.
ReplyDeleteIt reminded me of this blog: http://hungryforamonth.blogspot.com/
Our mayor challenged people in our town to do this last year. I can't remember the exact dollar amount, but it was basically nothing.
