We don't need terrorists any more. More and more of American soldiers are just killing themselves

Congressman Walter Jones points out that the suicides among U.S. military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to occur in record numbers.

I am not surprised by this. It is inevitable when one is engaged in immoral, homicidal behavior with no justification. How does one sleep at night?

I am sympathetic to exuberant young people who believed the jingoistic nonsense that their government fed them, and were encouraged on with "Support The Troops" by every Red Neck Ya Hoo in the country. They signed up to go overseas and kill people for stupid slogans like liberty, freedom, and democracy when nothing could be further from the truth.

These are the young people and, in some cases, grown adults who should have known better, who for the most part have been screwed over by a capitalistic system which has left them with no jobs, a poor education, and not much of a future state side. When you figure that you best option in life is to become a professionally trained killer for a mercenary army, you've sold your soul to the devil, and it is not a bargain in your favor because you have given up all hope of ever having any kind of a normal life ever again.

It is interesting that it has taken Walter Jones almost a decade to come to the sobering conclusion that his vote to send soldiers into Iraq was a mistake. Better late than never, but the price of hubris, stupidity, jingoism is huge dear Walter? How do you explain your error in judgment and what would keep you from making such mistakes in the future?

It is a wretched irony that the American soldier's biggest enemy at this point is themselves. They are killing themselves before an enemy, terrorist, or external agent can do it.

I wonder if Osama bin Laden knew just how stupid Americans are and calculated that it was only a matter of time when we, in our stupidity and lack of awareness, would kill ourselves and save our so called enemies the trouble?

It is time for America to repent its ignorance and sins although I am not holding my breath. We could all benefit, at the least, from a truth and reconciliation commission to get to the bottom of our government's stupidities.

Mental health care, as recommended, is pissing the ocean, farting in a hurricane. It is confession and repentence that it is needed to purify America's soul.

Suicide is not so much a mental health problem in this context as it is a spiritual disease. For all of America's religosity, it has lost touch with its soul. The huge symptom is the fact that its soldiers are killing themselves in record numbers in despair to put an end to lives that are no longer seen and felt as liveable.

When national service becomes soul murder, we all should examine our consciences.
