How About You, the film

How About You is an Irish film released at the end of 2007 in time for Christmas. It is comedy about a pot smoking young woman who comes to work for her sister who owns and manages an Assisted Living Facility for old folks.

There are four quirky, not so nice residents, who make life miserable for every one else because of the eccentric an obnoxious behavior. Predictably, the young woman gets angry with them, chastises them, repeatedly screws up to the chagrin of her sister/boss, but in the end wins the old folks over who then bond with each other and have a wonderful christmas.

Thankfully, the movie only lasts 90 minutes which is just enough time to come to like the characters and enjoy the sentimental and sappy plot.

It's a female coming of age story which demonstrates that younger folks, even pot smoking, confused ones, are smarter than, and have something to teach their elders when the elders behave like spoiled children.

The reversed roles of youth being wiser and more competent than the elderly is an agist myth which gets reinforced with this plot and perpetuates a social belief which is probably not in the best interest of our society. To laugh at the incompetent and nasty behaviors of grumpy and unreasonable old people is cheap humor and makes me wonder about the social value of this film.

Having said all this, I got a kick out of it to some extent.

I give it a 3 on Markham's 5 point scale.
