I have seen a huge increase in the number of situations where people have gotten into trouble with the new technology. This falls into three areas:
Texting leading spouses to accuse their partners of infidelity;
Sexting where kids are sending nude pictures of themselves to "friends" who then circulate them more widely;
College age people posting pictures of themselves in various compromising positions and then employers deciding not to hiring them.
The new technology has given us as human beings more power to communicate and many people are using that power irresponsibly leading to negative consequences for themselves and others. In therapy we sometimes talk about "boundary issues" and the use of these powerful communication technologies raise many boundary issues to new levels.
I am very interested in people's comments.
I see this in my practice all the time. It's so much easier to communicate surreptitiously that people quickly get themselves in over their heads...and suspicion and mistrust are rampant.
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly:
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. I think you are right that A the new technology makes communication too easy without usual constraints and B seem to take for granted a level of anonymity which isn't there and they are surprised when their communications are exposed and reach a wider audience.
Thanks for your comment.
All the best,
