"I can't help noting that no cultures in the word that I have ever heard of make such a fuss about children's bedtimes, and no cultures have so many adults who find it so hard either to go to sleep or wake up. Could these social facts be connected? I strongly suspect they are."
~John Holt~ Teach Your Own
My ex-wife and I had 9 kids. We always believed in the family bed. I think kids benefit with routine, but it can't be rigidly imposed. The way to screw up you kids royally is to insist on rigid sleep schedules especially if they are not congruent with the child's circadian rhythm.
I also think the American school schedule is one of the most counter productive for academic success that anyone could devise. I never met a teenager who would choose to get up at 5:30 AM to be in his/her classroom by 7:20 AM and be dismissed from school at 2:20 PM.
Thanks to my daughter, Katie for the quote.
