Matt Rothschild has an article in the June, 2010 issue of The Progressive entitled, "Is Fascism Coming To America?" He concludes at the end of the article, probably not.
However, I think it is already here. Why?
Wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few and the poor are suffering the middle class rapidly shrinking.
Armed militias are growing in number and size across America.
Racial scapegoating as become legal in Arizona and is pending in 7 other states.
The media is owned by corporations and is saturated with propaganda.
The corporations have been given free rein by the Supreme Court to bribe and blackmail politicians.
Democratic processes have been corrupted by negative advertising which mocks and ridicule and assasinates the character of those who oppose the monied interests.
Citizens have increasingly less power and influence on domestic and foreign policy. In fact, popular support is routinely ignored in favor of monied and political interests.
Citizen anger is deflected and redirected toward marginalized minorities such as gays, pregnant women, the poor, and immigrants.
The politics of fear is used to manipulate the populace into fearing unknown people generically labled as terrorists and persuading the populace to give up their civil rights, engage in endless war with no clear justification, and engage in human rights violations such as torture, detention with no habeas corpus, and search and seizure with no probable cause or judicial oversight.
I think Matthew Rothschild misses the point. The question is not is fascism coming, because it is already here. The question is will there become a grass roots revolution of overcome the fascistic state which has emerged?
